ARTFIVE0 is a public mural competition that took place in 2018 with submissions from dozens of regional artists to create a major artwork that will be prominently positioned along Al Sa’ada Street outside ICD Brookfield Place and facing onto the Gate Avenue main entrance in the DIFC. Constructed of concrete with a rendered finish, the overall dimension of the wall is 11 metres (high) x 53 metres (wide). The competition was created to encourage creativity and was open to all artists living, working and/or studying in the GCC countries to enter.
In 2019, Nesma Moharam was selected as the competition winner by a carefully selected panel of judges and received an AED 50,000 award to realise her vision.
about the winning artist
Based in Dubai, Egyptian artist, Nesma Moharam received her MFA from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo and later took on the position of assistant lecturer there. She has studied and explored both traditional and contemporary techniques with drawing, engraving, printmaking and her work demonstrates a fusion of approaches from her encounters and discoveries. Memories play an important role in her work and they help form a mental catalogue of images, which she uses throughout her artistic practice.
about the work
The winning entry, Metamorphosis of Dubai, celebrates a unique blend of Dubai’s past, present and future.
Dubai’s cultural traditions inherit their characteristics from the Bedouin generosity, a passion for knowledge, and an openness to other nations and cultures. From a small trading port to a flourishing metropolis, the growth and evolution of Dubai has been truly spectacular.
Nesma has embraced the history of Dubai by using camels, falcons and dallahs as the main local cultural elements in the artwork. However, she explored a different approach by using the imagery as toys in a jovial manner in order to show the hidden heritage of the city in a light-hearted and captivating way. The dallah is pouring sumptuous vibrant colours to resemble the multicultural community living in Dubai, while the rich sky blue and earthy yellow sand colours represent the vast Arabian desert. The assortment of child-like shapes, traditional concepts, graceful imagery and magnificent colors bring together a narrative of both authentic heritage and celebratory joyfulness
The shortlisted artists were announced in March 2019. We congratulate Ashekman Studio, Mariusz Krakowko, Robert Davidian, Say Studio and Turki Al Romaih for their entries. Learn more about their submissions and art practices via our Instagram page.
